The Serving Community

HR

The Appalachia Service Project is you! A community of people who come together to serve and share in the hills of Central Appalachia. Volunteers from different areas of the United States and of any religion or denomination serve through the ASP. High school youth groups with their adult leaders, college groups, adult group, couples, individuals and families all come to serve.

Each group must divide its participants into work crews consisting of 4 to 7 persons! Each work crew will spend the working hours of each day together at the family's home. Each work crew should have a designated leader who is responsible for his or her work crew. The work crew leaders and center staff will work together to guide the crew through the work. We encourage all participants who do not have knowledge of home repair skills to be willing to learn and practice skills before arriving at the center. A skilled person in each work crew would be very beneficial, although not required. Each person is expected to participate and be allowed to participate fully - together all will be learning new skills, challenging one another and sharing experiences. The talents and gifts of each willing to give can be used through a variety of channels.

Each volunteering group should designate a person (or two) to act as the "contact person." The contact person would be responsible for coordinating and collating the responses to the questions on the application form, for distributing all information to each group member, for the group's preparation through study sessions, for assuring that all necessary forms are completed, and should participate with the actual project
